What year did you get involved with Camp No Limits?

2004

Did you start as a family/camper, volunteer/staff, or another role?

Family

Fun fact about me:

Both our daughter, Adrienne, and her brother Patrick were very involved with a circus arts club at Scarborough schools called Gym Dandies. My husband, Jim, was an instructor in the club. Both kids have performed riding 6 foot unicycles in elaborate formations at national parades like the Fourth of July parade on Constitution Drive in Washington, DC and the Cherry Blossom Parade.

Why do you feel it is important to serve on the board?

I felt it was important to volunteer and serve on the board to give many other families, like our own, a chance to experience and learn together at camp. There are very few places to be able to connect with so many people who understand so much of our important journey.

Favorite thing about camp:

There are many favorite things about camp – the parents and kids that cling to each other on day one and by the final day’s talent show and dance party, they are sitting with their new friends and enjoying the separation from one another. I love the independence that is established and tested during camp. The beachfront in Maine on a warm day with prosthetic limbs scattered everywhere and the kids playing in the water with no attempt to cover their limbs. A good session in a parent support group when people show their vulnerability and are rewarded with hearing they aren’t alone and sometimes a plan for change starts to form.

Any tidbits of advice for families attending camp?

My advice for families coming to camp is to be open to trying something new and encourage your camper and siblings to do the same. Your family can learn and grow even while you are playing and having fun!
